Bioplastics can be recycled mechanically and chemically, as well as by composting.
If correctly separated from traditional plastic waste, bioplastic production waste can easily be recycled mechanically, a field in which Gianeco has been working for many years, successfully recycling bioplastics such as PLA, PBS, PBAT and blends of biodegradable plastics.
While for post-consumer bioplastic waste, there are currently insufficient flows, with the exception of some tests carried out in closed collection circuits (such as festivals, fairs, concerts and other events where it was possible to distribute disposable items made exclusively of bioplastic with subsequent collection and mechanical recycling.
Bioplastics can be recycled correctly by putting bioplastic items in the organic bin if they are biodegradable and compostable, and in the plastic bin or undifferentiated bin if they are not compostable.
There are a number of chemical bioplastic recycling plants, but they do not currently operate due to the limited availability of biodegradable plastic waste to run such plants.
