Many people are confused when it comes to Polyethylenes. It’s not surprising with so many different descriptions floating around ie HDPE, 300 / 500 / 1000 Grade, High Molecular and Ultra High Molecular Weight. This confusion commonly results in the wrong grade being specified. The density and molecular weight are the most important values when characterizing the properties of polyethylene. Many mechanical properties ie, flexural and torsional rigidity ( twistability ) and yield stress, particularly depend on DENSITY whilst the notched impact strength ( toughness ) especially at low temperatures, wear resistance, dimensional stability at increased temperatures and resistance to stress cracking all depend on MOLECULAR WEIGHT. As the molecular weight of polyethylene increases, higher values are obtained for a number of technically important properties:
WEAR RESISTANCE
NOTCHED IMPACT STRENGTH
STRESS CRACKING RESISTANCE
ENERGY ABSORPTION CAPACITY AT HIGHER STRESS RATES
HEAT DISTORTION RESISTANCE
ULTIMATE TENSILE STRENGTH AT ELEVATED TEMPERATURES
IT IS ONLY AS THE MOLECULAR WEIGHT INCREASES DOES POLYETHYLENE BECOME AN ENGINEERING PLASTIC.
