Biodegradable plastic is a plastic made from organic material and without using petroleum derivatives. It is very similar to traditional synthetic plastics in terms of both lightness and strength. However, being produced through polymerisation from organic matter (e.g. wheat, maize, beet, cane sugar, etc.), bioplastic is 100% biodegradable. It can be reabsorbed by natural agents on land or in the atmosphere much more quickly and with less impact on the environment. Typically, it dissolves in the environment in 4-5 years, depending on its chemical composition, without leaving residual pollutants. Therefore, it can be used to produce various plastic products (e.g. envelopes, shopping bags, disposable cups/cups, other plastic products) with less environmental impact than traditional plastic.
